Skincare Advice I'd Give to My Younger Self (Now That I Actually Know Stuff)

Only if I could go back in time and talk to my younger self. These are the skincare advices I’d love to give her.

So let’s talk.

Embrace and fall in love with your skin tone

Don’t let anyone tell you that you need to lighten or change the colour of your skin.

Scrubbing is good when trying to remove dead skin cells but not to change your skin tone. Fall in love with your skin- porcelain, olive, caramel, espresso, golden, dusky or whatever you may want to call it.

Please don’t pop your pimple

Trust me. As fun as it may feel, it will leave behind a dark mark that will take forever to go away.

Burning or tingling sensation doesn’t mean it’s working

If a skincare product burns or stings, please wash it off and don’t apply it again. It’s not working rather it’s destroying your skin barrier!

Sunscreen is just not for beach days

You thought wearing sunscreen is only for the beach? Please no. Daily sunscreen prevents wrinkles, sun spots, hyperpigmentation and keeps your face looking young for longer.

Even if your foundation or moisturiser says "SPF 15"—you still need to apply sunscreen additionally. Reapply after 3 hours if you’re outdoors.

Acne products don’t have to be harsh on your skin

Usually, anti acne products are drying for skin and you thought there can’t be a better way.

This led to even more dryness, redness and itching. Gentle cleansers, moisturizers and creams along with actives can also help to clear out acne like this Skin Renewal Night Cream with Proretinol, hyaluronic acid, collagen, cold pressed passionfruit oil, rosehip oi and argan oil.

Expensive doesn’t always mean better

That £80 cream on the billboards is not the only solution to get the skin of your dreams. Ingredients are far more important than branding. Start reading labels and get familiar with ingredient names. Google is your best friend.

Long and complex skincare routines are not for you

Just because your friend does a 10-step skincare routine doesn’t mean you need it too. Simple and easy to follow skincare routines will work better in the long run.

Be patient with your skin and skincare products

Nothing works overnight-not even your skincare. And if it does then it’s definitely not safe for your skin. Be consistent with your routine and give it time to work.

Water and good night’s sleep are your best friends

What happens inside your body makes a huge difference on your skin. Your body is made up of approximately 70% water so it’s very natural for it to have an impact on your overall health and skin as well. A consistent sleep schedule brings balance to your body and reflects on your skin. So no late nights every week please!

Your Diet Shows Up on Your Skin

That fried chicken, with extra loaded fries, a large can of soda along with salted caramel fudge brownies topped with vanilla icecream sounds like an ultimate treat to yourself. Isn’t it? I’m not saying to give up everything you love but keeping a balance is key.

Clean your face properly

Please don’t be lazy when it comes to washing face at night especially with makeup on. It will hardly take two minutes and your future skin will thank you.

Give importance to your neck as much as your face

Apply that moisturizer, SPF, serums and toners on your neck because your neck will age faster than your face as it’s more delicate in comparison to your face.

Retinol is your best friend

After turning 30 try to incorporate retinol based products in your night care routine. If there is one ingredient that you need to solve almost 99% of your skin problems-acne, dullness, pigmentation, dark spots, pores, whiteheads and blackheads then it is retinol. Start with a low % like 0.5% pro retinol in Skin Renewal Night Cream. Use it at night and thank me later.

Moisturizer is Essential

You thought oily skin didn’t need moisturizer or you don’t need moisturizer in summers because your face is already producing too much oil. All skin types need moisture. When you don’t use it your skin produces more oil. Use lightweight, water or gel-based moisturizers in summers.

Consistency is Greater than Perfection

Let’s admit you can’t have a perfect routine every single day. There will be days when you’ll sleep with makeup on, not moisturize when your skin needs it and indulge in junk food. Life happens. What’s important is not making it a habit.

Lastly, don’t be too hard on yourself and learn to love yourself, your skin and rest all will fall into place.
